Chapter 6
Brodie and Bryan waited to meet Dr. Jarrett Hansom. The receptionist at the desk in the front had led them back here, assuring them the doctor would be right with them.
She had been obliging as soon as they had shown their I.D.s
âIâm not sure why this should be an FBI matter,â she had murmured. âWe will find Captain Lynch. Everyone admires and loves him. We want the world for him!â
The office sheâd brought them to was an old solarium at the rear of the first floor; windows there looked out over a garden area. Nurses and patients were out despite the snow on the ground and the fact that nothing was growing. The garden had been decorated with outdoor Christmas decorations, and Brodie had to admit the area was attractive and pleasing. A life-sized creche had been set up on one area while another offered a menorah. There was a crescent star in one area as well, but all the religious symbols were small. Larger plastic reindeer and sleighs were set here and there, and a natural pineâsomehow kept free of ice and snowâhad lights and ornaments.
Concrete benches and tablesâbuilt to withstand both the brutal winters and the dead heat of summer, Brodie assumedâhad been set at random angles among the decorations and symbols.
In some areas, patients sat alone with orderlies or nurses. Here and there groups of three and four sat together talking.
At the four edges of the âgardenâ area, there were men dressed in the same white camouflage outfits Brodie had seen earlier on the men hunting for Captain Lynch.
âNo guns,â he murmured aloud.
âBig, strapping men,â Bryan noted, hands folded behind his back as he stared out the windows next to Brodie.
âBut no guns,â Brodie repeated.
âNo.â
The door opened, and they turned as Hansom entered the room.
The man certainly cut a striking figure. He was about six-two with wavy, dark-blond hair, one swatch falling over his forehead. His nose was straight and fine, cheekbones broad, eyes a deep green and well-spaced. He appeared to be lean-muscled, and moved with ease and authority, entering the room with his hand extended as he approached Brodie and Bryan.
âI understand youâre with the FBI. I didnât think you came in on missing persons cases. And we really donât believe our patient was kidnapped. Our fellow just went missing earlier today, and we have our people out looking for him. I understand he was sighted in a rabbit suit with a gas mask and machete, but I donât believe Captain Lynch is dangerous. Heâs a good man, a true patriot. Heâs just been through so much. The man went on something like seven tours in the Middle East. Weâre trying very hard to help him. If anyone deserves a good life now, itâs Captain Lynch.â
His words were passionate as he pumped their hands. He seemed to be sincere.
Heâd been followed in by a tall, attractive, blonde woman wearing a white doctorâs coat. She looked a little pale as he spoke, but added nothing.
âIâm Brodie McFadden, consulting, and this is my brother, Special Agent Bryan McFadden,â Brodie said.
